“It’s almost like [Chinese company Bytedance] recognize[s] that technology’s influencing kids’ development, and they make their domestic version a spinach TikTok, while they ship the opium version to the rest of the world,” says Tristan Harris. https://t.co/Jro1FTGjKB pic.twitter.com/kZ4ucLerar

Exactly. Not only is TikTok a spy app & dagger aimed at USA nat’l security, the app is also a dagger aimed at our kids.On behalf of the Trump Admin, this is why I was right to go after TikTok.As even 60 Minutes sees, TikTok is opium sent to our kids but China kids get spinach https://t.co/Kpfd76gMRA

Bipartisan leaders in Congress write Apple and Google over the companies’ decisions to allow #TikTok in their app stores:“Turning a blind eye to an application that permits such surveillance endangers Americans, specifically the overwhelming number of teenagers that use TikTok” pic.twitter.com/FS37zb98Cv

TikTok is beholden to the Chinese Communist Party. FCC Commissioner @BrendanCarrFCC is right, the U.S. should ban it. More of our conversation: https://t.co/CQXV7w3VtK pic.twitter.com/FCurfNyZg9

Simply look at the difference in what goes viral in the US and #China. There are no blackout, car theft or skull breaker challenges in China.#TikTok is an arm of the #CCP. It’s poisoning the minds of our children.Ban TikTok. @60Minutes https://t.co/QHqpUTizt4

#China’s regime uses #TikTok to spread propaganda narratives. And steal data. #American apps are blocked in China, so why is TikTok available here? #CCP https://t.co/Vusl2m0NqW

This segment misses a huge detail: Bytedance has distinct apps for the China & US markets because the Chinese and US governments have distinct approaches to digital platform regulation. In other words, when you don%27t regulate platforms, it can harm kids. Shocking, I know. https://t.co/cJ6Vq4y0Wd

So Tristan is in fact arguing that he much prefers the product of the Chinese gov’s approach to digital platform regulation for kids than the product of the US’s. Even though I disagree with how he made his point, I do think it’s one that people should reflect on seriously.
