The Lady and the Peacock: The Life of Aung San Suu Kyi
March 27, 2012 // 11:00am — 12:30pm
On April 1, Burma will hold elections. Among the candidates running for a parliamentary seat is Aung San Suu Kyi, the long-time democracy leader recently freed from house arrest, a plight she endured for 15 of the last 20 years. Several days before the ballot, the Wilson Center’s Asia Program will host an event for a timely new biography about Aung San Suu Kyi.
From the book publisher: “This major new biography of Aung San Suu Kyi—the Nobel Peace Prize laureate known to the world as a visionary force for democracy in Burma, and to her followers as simply ‘The Lady’—draws on previously untapped sources and extensive news reporting to present a vivid, up-to-date portrait that is essential reading at a moment when Burma, after decades of stagnation, is suddenly in flux as never before. Author Peter Popham, a foreign correspondent for The Independent, distills five years of research—including covert trips to Burma, meetings with Aung San Suu Kyi, and previously unpublished diary excerpts by her assistant and friend Ma Thanegi—into The Lady and the Peacock, which deftly portrays Suu Kyi’s struggles and failings alongside her strength, courage, and intellect.”
About the speaker: Peter Popham, a foreign correspondent and feature writer for The Independent, has reported from Albania, Mongolia, South Asia, and, most recently, Italy. He is also the author of Tokyo: The City at the End of the World. He works from both England and Milan.
Popham has recently published an op-ed on Burma in The New York Times, and participated on a Women in the World panel on Burma covered by the Daily Beast.
Location: 6th Floor, Woodrow Wilson Center
